How the Atkins Diet Works

Discussions about how the Atkins diet works have been going on for decades, ever since Dr. Atkins published his first book in 1972. Debates about how well it really works and whether it is healthy or not continue to rage today. The main reason there is so much controversy over how the Atkins diet works is because it runs counter to all of the diet advice that most of us had been following for generations before Atkins came along.

The Atkins Approach Focuses on the Foods You Eat ? NOT Calories

Traditional diets focus on calorie intake ? the fewer calories you take in, the more weight you will lose. The Atkins approach focuses on what kind of foods you eat instead of the number of calories. It means no more counting calories. Instead, you need to watch your carbohydrate intake because Dr. Atkins felt that carbohydrates were what lead to weight gain. In other words, if you limit your carbs, you?ll lose weight because you will burn stored body fat in the absence of carbs for fuel.

Carbohydrates

It sounds simple, but there are a variety of factors involved. How does the Atkins diet work to get you to burn off the fat? Carbohydrates are the basic fuel for energy in the human body, and the first fuel the body will naturally turn to. So if you?re eating a lot of pastas, breads, rice, and snack foods like crackers, you will naturally burn these first. Anything extra will be stored as fat.

Proteins and Fats

Proteins and fats, on the other hand, are fuels that the body processes differently. They can also be used as fuel, but they break down into energy more slowly and aren?t as readily stored as fat in the body.

What is ?Ketosis??

Naturally, if you eat more fats and proteins your body will be working harder to convert it to energy and relying as well on some of the fat already stored in your body ? it?s a sort of ?double whammy? ? you are working harder to convert foods into energy and you are using more of your extra body fat. ?Ketosis? is the term for the body?s converting stored fat into energy when there is not a sufficient source from carbohydrates, and it is the basis for how the Atkins diet works.

Stabilize Insulin Production

The Atkins Diet also works by slowing the production of insulin in the body. Insulin is the chemical that converts sugars and carbohydrates into fuel. The more carbs you take in, the more insulin your body will produce in order to keep your blood sugar from getting too high. If you don?t use the sugars as fuel, the insulin will convert it to ?storage mode? ? it becomes body fat to be saved for use later when you may need it.

Today most of us have plenty of food and don?t really need to be storing away fat for use as an energy source ? we probably won?t ever be lacking food. So the Atkins diet works to suppress and stabilize insulin production and allow you to burn more of your stored fat as energy. Interestingly, once you start using the Atkins plan, your cravings for sweets and carbohydrates usually decrease as your blood sugar and insulin levels stabilize.

You Won?t Have to Avoid Carbohydrates Forever

Remember, you won?t always have to avoid carbohydrates completely. There are four phases to the Atkins Diet. Each one allows more carbohydrates in your daily diet so that you won?t get bored and you will get some of the energy and fuel you need from this traditional source. If you choose to stay on the maintenance program after losing the weight you want, you will be able to eat carbs in moderation so that you don?t gain back what you lost, but you don?t continue dropping weight, either.

At first most doctors were skeptical about a diet that didn?t count calories, but today the medical community is split. Many still have reservations about how the Atkins diet works, but just as many feel the Atkins approach is sound because it takes the worry out of counting calories and has lots of protein, an important resource for muscle development and overall health.

Okay, so far Parts 1 through 3 do not sound so much like scams but in all reality anything that is sold purely to generate profit even if it is only slightly ?misleading? is in some way shape or form scamming the consumer.

Here goes Part 4 of the Top Weight Loss Scams of 2006.

4. The Supplement Labels That Say ?Proprietary Blend.?

The supplement companies get you to believe their product is superior by using fancy marketing hooks that sound medical in nature like for instance, ?clinically proven? or ?doctor recommended.? In addition they might say ?scientifically formulated? and of course ?research has proven? but the one that is really misleading is the term that sits on the ingredient label and that is ?Proprietary Blend.? The term ?proprietary blend? not only occurs with weight loss supplements but supplements in general and they might say something like ?myometaprohydroxyburnthefat? or something like that.

Now why do companies do this? For one, so they can prevent the competition from knowing exactly what specific amounts of ingredients they are putting in the ?proprietary blend.? This prevents ?knock offs.? If you notice on the Supplement facts label it will say proprietary whatever and then beside it the TOTAL amount of the proprietary blend in either mg or grams. Underneath that is all of the ingredients in that blend but to the side of them there is only an asterisk; not a specific amount in mg or grams. A company with a valuable and legitimate product will do this as a means to prevent knock offs of these products which is smart.

The second reason companies (the not so legitimate ones) do this is so they can hide the fact that more times than not there is very little of each of the active ingredients in that ?proprietary blend? to actually do anything substantial. Believe it or not, this happens quite often

Does this mean that ?proprietary blends? are scamming the consumer? Not always but truth be told there?s really no way to know how much of ?what? is really in the blend unless a lab assay of the product is done. Sorry, but I don?t even have the answers and some of the top guys in the nutrition and supplementation field don?t even have the answers.

One way you could ?guess? if the ?proprietary blend? contains at least enough ?stuff? to have an impact is to look at the total amount (in mg or grams) of the blend and then see how many ingredients are in the blend. The math is simple if you divide the total number of grams by the number of ingredients but that can be misleading because that will only provide you with an average amount of each of the ingredients. If a blend has a minimal total number of grams i.e. 500 mg and a whole slew of ingredients then you can make a halfway ?decent? guess as to whether the ?proprietary blend? has value or not. Many ingredients will have a minimal effect if any in small doses. Either way, it?s still hard to decipher.

This is probably one of the trickiest ?scams? out there and the reason that word is in quotes is because no, it?s not always a scam but being that the supplement industry is so loosely regulated it?s darn near impossible to really know what you?re getting.

Here?s what you should take away from this whole segment of articles. Don?t blame yourself if you fail while using any of the diets, pills, powders or devices that promised ?great results? because if you do choose to use them; fine, just understand that they are flawed approaches that have left millions of Americans frustrated in their fitness and weight loss pursuits. But if you had the solution to losing weight, getting into the body you?ve always, looking and feeling your best and became empowered to change the way you look and feel forever then making another New Years weight loss resolution would be a thing of the past. Wouldn?t that be nice! Best of luck in your New Years fitness and weight loss endeavors!

Expanding Waistlines

This article first appeared in the September 2005 issue of the Zone Net Newsletter which discusses Zone Diet and other weight loss issues.

As many people know, our expanding waistlines are at epidemic proportions here in America. For those who are dubious, epidemic, according to the Webster-Merriam online dictionary means, affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community or region at the same time.

Overweight or More?

When a person is in excess of twenty percent above their normal weight in terms of fat mass, then that individual is considered obese. Morbid obesity is when a person is fifty to a hundred percent above normal weight, more than one hundred lbs above normal weight, or so overweight that the extra baggage substantially interferes with the health of normal daily functions.

Extra Baggage?

Many of us have been carrying around extra weight for so long and have become so desensitized to our gradually increasing dress sizes, and have become so used to referring to ourselves as healthy and voluptuous that we may not be fully aware that there may be a body fat issue.

Body Mass Index

The Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment can be very helpful. This is used by health professionals to ascertain if an individual is underweight, overweight or within the healthy weight range.

BMI measures your weight in relation to your height.

A BMI of 18.5-24.9 is considered healthy, a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of thirty or more is considered obese. The higher weights in the healthy range apply to people with more muscle and bone.

BMI does not distinguish the difference between the weight of fat and the weight of muscle, which is exponentially more. Because of this, it is not always entirely accurate as far as the prediction of health concerns. For example, a bodybuilder or someone with a lot's muscles may have a BMI that is numerically in the unhealthy range, despite that the fact they may be healthy as an ox.

BMI may also fall short of accurately reflecting body fat in individuals who are quite short (less than 5 ft) and in older individuals who tend to lose muscle mass as they age. It can also be inaccurate for some racial and ethnic groups like African-American and Latino American females, who often have different body types than Caucasian and Asian females, for instance.

The location of fat on your body is also quite important. Those who carry fat primarily around their waists might be more likely to develop health problems than those who carry their extra baggage in their hips and thighs. Even if your BMI falls within the normal range, this is still true. To measure your waist circumference, place a tape measure around your naked abdomen just above your hip bone. The tape should be snug, parallel to the floor and should not compress your skin. Relax and exhale as you measure your waist.

Welcome Back Everyone!

Ah summer time, it's one of my favorite seasons and it has everything to do with free time, sun and surf. Activities like volleyball, tennis, soccer, swimming, surfing, sprinting after curious children, playing frisbee with the dog, walking a mile to get a frozen yogurt or to find that lost flipper on the beach take precedence. All the ingredients that make exercise happen because, it's summer and it?s fun.

I'd like to keep that spirit of summer alive through out the year. By finding a greater reason to stay cardio fit, besides the fact that it keeps you young, vibrant and healthy forever. Everyone does their strength training with me and they do fine, with good results. But I?m no longer satisfied with good results! The cardio component is still missing for some, inspite of my stressing its importance. So I?ve come up with a solution.

I propose that we get involved in training for a charitable events that involves either a 5K or 10K run (you can walk if that?s what you can do, unless you?ve joined a team sport, then your time is a factor). If everyone chooses an event that will be a motivational challenge you may end up making these events a lifestyle, extending your life, expanding your heart and opening your mind. Other very real benefits include reaching goals with real results, a strong sense of purpose to your training, a chance to meet, share and socialize with other like minded souls. A chance to feel the benefits of team spirit and a huge sense of accomplishment that comes along with your lowered body fat levels.

It's time to get into the spirit of giving..?it?s guaranteed life promoting. All proceeds of your efforts go to the charitable cause sponsoring the run. This site has a current list of all upcoming events to choose from http://www.newyorkled.com/indexRaces009.htm#races. I will be keeping logs of everyone's progress, which will be documented and discussed in upcoming newsletters. Your story could be the next spot light article in this newsletter. Just think! Your chance to inspire others too!

Eventually if enough people are involved and motivated, I'd like to reach out and sponsor my own event for a good cause. Perhaps I?ll sponsor an ab fab marathon (Nicks suggestion), or body fat loss competition (over a month long period)I am open to suggestions, feedback and ideas. Most importantly, together, lets get involved! Improving ourselves as we help others!

Fitness Resolutions

The holidays are now officially over and it?s time to get back on track! January 1st is the day we all get to start over. A time to make the changes in our lives that we?ve wanted to make but got sidetracked along the way. So, you've had your fill of tempting treats. The holidays are always exciting and indulgent. Now that they're over, hopefully you'll never want to look at another piece of pumpkin pie or vat of mashed potatoes. Starting a healthy eating program will be a pleasure instead of a chore.

Maybe emotionally, you're ready for a change. For most Americans, New Year's is a time of new beginning and emotional rebirth. You may feel the desire to alter your way of life or spend more time focusing on yourself. There's no better time to improve your health.

Also, there's plenty of time to prepare for the next holiday season. You've got a whole year to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. The next time the holidays hit, you'll be better prepared to enjoy yourself without overindulging.

Approximately 90 percent of Americans make at least one New Year's resolution each year. Unfortunately, no matter how well intentioned they are, most people fail to keep their resolutions.

Here are a few ways you can ensure your success:

1. SET OBTAINABLE GOALS. It's reasonable to lose 10 percent of your starting weight within 3 months. The goal of the EVERY BODY LOSES plan is to help you learn how to make healthy eating choices that you can carry with you for life. Rather than focusing on losing as much weight as you can as quickly as you can, realize that, if you follow the plan correctly, this could be the last program you?ll ever need.

2. SET SMALL GOALS AND REWARD YOURSELF OCCASIONALLY. With the EVERY BODY LOSES plan, you may choose to set mini-goals. Once you reach your mini-goal, you can reward yourself and move on to the next mini-goal. Do not always give yourself food as a reward. Instead, treat yourself to new clothes that flatter your new body or a DVD of a favorite movie.

3. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE. You'll be more likely to succeed if you have friends or family offering you encouragement and praise.

TOP 10 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS

Here is an interesting list of most common New Year?s Resolutions. Whether you're starting a new diet, committing to a regular exercise routine, or promising to spend more time at home, chances are there's someone else out there with the same idea. Does yours make this list?

1. Lose weight

2. Exercise more

3. Spend more time with family

4. Get out of debt

5. Work less

6. Quit smoking or drinking

7. Get involved in community service

8. Read more

9. Get organized

10. Live life to the fullest

Be well & stay fit!

Gradual Change of the Weight Watchers Diet

As we all know by now, Weight Watchers is based on a points system and that point system basically runs the diet and everything in the diet is based on this point system. There are a few variations of the POINTS system but there isn?t much of a difference at all. The main differences are based on how the dieter looks at fiber and how much fiber they want to eat. If the dieter uses fiber as a ?point enhancer?(reducer) then they would substitute the 50 pt. value in the Weight Watchers Formula for a 70 pt. base value. Other variations are that the POINTSfinder manual calculator that is handed out in Weight Watcher meetings does not reach a points value of 2 until after 70 calories have been reached, rather than 50 as the formula states. This makes the point values 20 pts. higher than first thought.

As time has progressed, so has the Weight Watchers diet. Recently the diet has started to take into consideration how much people want to exercise and how that affects the point system in a whole new way. Certain exercises are given certain negative point values to offset eating some foods that might not have been allowed in earlier variations of the diet.

The Core Plan

When the Atkins Diet and the South Beach diet became more and more popular, Weight Watchers had to come up with a different variation to compete with these diets to be able to keep their dieters happy and feeling like they were still using a diet that was modern and up to day. So, the Core Plan was invented to mirror the Atkins and South Beach diets respectively. In essence, the Core Plan eliminates certain foods all together and focuses on ?core? foods that they should eat until satisfied but not full. These core foods are basically deemed healthy foods from all food groups. Still staying with the points system, dieters are allowed 35 pts. a week to eat non-core foods.

The Flex Plan

This is yet another variation that was touched on above that includes exercise into the Weight Watchers equation. A set number of points are given for a given day based on the dieters current weight. Then, the number of points could be increased when the dieter would exercise. This is a reference to the clever title ?flex? which allows the dieter more points that are not based on their weight that they could use each week, but are not required to use.

TurnAround

This program was adopted in late 2004 and incorporates all the above plans into one big plan, and was created to help a person maintain a healthy lifestyle beyond just eating foods with points assessed to them. The program includes healthy foods of course, but also 8 Good Healthy Guidelines, activities, and support of other Weight Watcher members. This well balanced plan is supposed to help a dieter maintain their weight through a lifetime maintenance plan.

Weight Watchers is a diet that is tried and proven by millions of people around the world. Find more info and blog entries about this time-tested diet and other great diets here at http://www.eweightlossblog.com, or you can find great health tips and diet tips here at http://www.ihealthblog.com

Psychological Factors in Weight Management

To continue the educational series on your health and fitness lifestyle, this article is based on accredited college nutrition programs and literature based on proven science. My hope is to empower you to take responsibility for your nutrition plan. One does not have to become a fanatic and eat perfectly to be healthy!

How we think and feel about food is profoundly influenced by how food is used in our families as children. If food is used as entertainment a reward a bribe a punishment or stress relief, from sadness, anger, or other negative emotions, problems may ensue.

Often, people will eat when they are not hungry, only bored, sad, angry, upset, or lonely. When eating for these reasons, they usually eat foods high in fat, sugar, or both. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a meal, just be sure to get sufficient healthy food and limit your quantities of junk food.

People who eat for reasons other than hunger will sometimes feel guilty after they indulge. This will often lead to more overeating and more guilt. These people often become obsessed with food cookie monster syndrome. There are support groups and counseling for people who over-eat for emotional reasons.

The flip side of food obsession is anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Anorexia nervosa is a serious condition in which the person stops or severely curtails their food intake to induce weight loss. Approximately ten percent of people who are anorexic die of their disease. People with this condition see themselves as being fat, even when extremely emaciated.

Bulimia is a condition where the patient eats food (sometimes gorging) and then vomits or takes laxatives or diuretics to avoid weight gain or induce weight loss. This can result in the loss of electrolytes and minerals essential for proper heart function and pH balance in the blood. Both these conditions are serious and require medical assistance.

Success in weight control comes by understanding the cause of your individual problem and then developing a program accordingly. Some people, who were unaware of what good nutrition consists of, only need to learn the facts about nutrition and exercise to apply what they have learned without difficulty.

Others have unconscious eating patterns such as eating while doing other activities and not paying attention to what or how much they are eating. By being aware of the problem and using techniques such as behavior modification techniques, can help the person with problems such as these.

People who have trouble changing eating habits or extreme obesity may have deep-seated emotional or psychiatric problems and may be using food to help alleviate the symptoms. Consuming large quantities of high-sugar or high-starch foods releases serotonin in the brain, which imparts a feeling of wellbeing. This can be an attempt to relieve undiagnosed clinical depression or anxiety.

Once you apply the principles of weight control for a while, it becomes part of your life style, like taking a shower or making the bed. You lose your taste for high-fat, high-sugar food and eat healthier food out of choice even when weight control isn't an issue. A blended approach including education, healthy eating habits, and exercise, along with counseling if needed, will produce permanent fat loss and weight control. A step forward in your Fitness Lifestyle.

The ?dietary landmines? (i.e. things to avoid for a healthy diet plan!):

?Sugar ? sugar is linked to a number of diseases such as obesity and adult diabetes and malnutrition. Sugar stops nutrients being absorbed and another problem with sugar is that the blood tends to stick together more raising your risk of cardiovascular disease. Sugar is also classed as a ?bad fat?. Healthy Diet = no sugar!

?Caffeine ? Caffeine stops nutrients being absorbed and increases your loss of minerals and other essential nutrients, particularly from the bones. If you have osteoporosis or arthritis, avoid it totally. Otherwise, no more than one latte a day!

?Alcohol ? Alcohol also prevents the absorption of nutrients and damages cells. (Reduce your intake as much as possible for a healthy diet plan).

?Vegetable oils and Margarine ? of all the oils, hydrogenated oils and margarine are the worst; also don?t heat vegetable oils or fry with them. This is because they turn into a fat structure (trans-fatty acids) that damages cells. Margarine is one chemical element away from plastic and is dangerous at all temperatures - definitely not part of a healthy diet. And heated vegetable oils, along with margarine (whether hot or cold) are rancid fats and form damaging chemicals in our body.

They are linked to diseases such as strokes, Alzheimer?s, MS, coronary artery disease, cancer, macular degeneration, just to name a few. Extra virgin Olive oil in very small amounts is best (keep it in the fridge). Advice for a healthy diet is to use olive oil or cook in butter or ghee on low heat.

?Fried foods ? Fried foods of all types fall into the same category as above. If you eat fried foods, you need to take plenty of antioxidants and plenty of the good fats to counteract them. Good fats keep you slim, regulate your hormones, keep your arteries clean and help to prevent some cancers, heart disease and strokes. Examples of good fats are fish, meat, nuts, flaxseed oil, borage oil, linseed oil, avocados - to name a few. Bad fats do the opposite!

?Carbonated drinks ? Carbonated drinks do not form part of a healthy diet. Carbonation is produced by phosphoric acid and this causes the following major problems: 1) It acidifies your system ? the ideal environment for cancer and arthritis. 2) It neutralizes stomach acid so you don?t absorb nutrients. 3) It increases the loss of minerals from your body. They frequently have caffeine or sugar ? see the above. Health professionals commonly agree that carbonated drinks will cause an epidemic of disease in our youth.

?Burned animal fat ? it tastes great to some people, but burned animal fat is carcinogenic and there are a mile of studies to prove it. You can ?have your steak and eat it? and make it part of a healthy diet plan, but make sure it is slow cooked and preferably medium rare. None of the black stuff!

?Carbohydrates ? avoid simple carbohydrates like sugar, starches (potatoes, corn, wheat). Carbohydrates are a source of energy but we need slow release energy as opposed to fast carbohydrates that give us too much sugar. Examples of slow release carbohydrates are vegetables, beans, tomatoes.

?Sugar substitutes containing Aspartame - any so called ?diet? drinks and diet products contain aspartame ? a dangerous sugar substitute linked to a growing list of health problems such as: headache, memory loss, seizures, vision loss, coma and cancer. It worsens or mimics the symptoms of such diseases and conditions as fibromyalgia, MS, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer's, chronic fatigue and depression. Definitely not part of a healthy diet.

?Don?t smoke!

Now we come to food that promotes health and that you should make part of a healthy diet plan!:

?Drink 8-10 glasses of pure, fresh water every day. This assists the body in dealing with toxins and keeps you hydrated. A small investment in a water filter is good advice. In the long run, it's a cheaper option than bottled water and will keep you and your family healthy. Remember to change the filter regularly.

?Two eggs a day ? the most recent scientific studies conclusively prove that eating eggs will not raise the levels of dangerous cholesterol (LDL). The scientists really got this one wrong! Eggs are a very cheap and healthy food source of vitamins and protein and actually have very little effect on cholesterol. They are a key feature of a healthy diet. If the egg is not overly cooked or fried, then the nutrients will not be damaged and are easily absorbed. So eat them soft boiled, poached or lightly scrambled.

?Plenty of vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables ? a great source of minerals, vitamins and fibre.

?Meat ? slow cooked and to medium rare to avoid over-cooking. Meat is still one of the best sources of amino acids (protein), 'good fats', minerals and vitamins. Fish is also a fantastic healthy food and a great source of good fats (omega oils) too ? just make sure you buy your fish from a trusted supplier so you avoid heavy metal contamination (such as Mercury).

?Other examples of good fats are fish, meat, nuts, flaxseed oil, borage oil, linseed oil, avocados - to name a few. Most people find it difficult to consume enough essential fatty acids from a healthy diet - in this case we recommend you take essential fatty acid supplements from a reliable and high quality source.

?Butter instead of margarine ? margarine, when at or above room temperature will turn into rancid fat and damage cells.

?Salt your food to taste! Salt is essential for nerve transmission and in providing all your sells with liquid. Iodized sea salt is an excellent source. Avoid all types of processed salt. No single medical study has ever proven a relationship between salt intake and high blood pressure, which is a calcium deficiency.

?A small to moderate amount of exercise each day ? about 20 minutes is fine for strength, flexibility and cardiovascular health. Little and often is best. If you don?t have time to jog or walk in the mornings or evenings, even just doing some 10 minutes of press-ups, sit-ups and stretches is much better than doing nothing. If you don?t have time to go to the gym, you can try working out at home.

As you can see, none of these things are really that hard to do. If you have trouble with this healthy diet plan then I?d encourage you to begin by writing down everything you eat over a 7 day period then start making small changes rather than drastic alterations so that you find it easy to adapt to and stick to this healthier diet.

Essential Nutrients are Part of a Healthy Diet Plan

Whilst most people will tell you that you can get everything you need from the food you eat, in fact the opposite is true ? especially if we are to get the nutrients in their optimal amounts.

We live in an age where we are subjected to chemicals and fertilizers in our food, pollution, a 'fast food' culture - all of this places higher demands on the body in terms of nutrition.

When you combine this with the fact that our farm soils are overused and the crops which are produced (and the animals that feed from them) are depleted of minerals - it is no wonder why it is so hard to enjoy a healthy diet from the food we eat.

We see evidence of this in rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cancer, chronic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis and many others. The answer, is to supplement with a broad range of nutrients - vitamins, minerals, amino acids (protein), and essential fatty acids and antioxidants.

When you combine nutritional supplements with healthy diet choices, then you are giving yourself the best chance to avoid one of many nutritional deficiency diseases.

Eating Out

I know how difficult it can be do stick to a healthy diet when trying to eat out. Here are some tips that might prevent you from totally ?blowing it? the next time you dine out.

1. As soon as your food is served, ask for a box and put half of your meal into it to take home. Restaurant portions are usually twice the size they should be anyway.

2. Don't ruin a nice, low fat salad with creamy dressing. Go for the vinaigrette or oil and vinegar, and use them sparingly.

3. If you go out to dinner, are at someone?s house for dinner or are generally in any situation where you cannot prepare your own food, do the best you can to choose the healthiest food possible. Scrape heavy sauce off meat, order salad dressing on the side, and eat your salad first.

4. Eat your salad first and, when your dinner is served, eat your veggies first, then the carbs and meat. You most likely will not be able to finish.

5. Request steamed veggies.

6. Don't let yourself down by getting (or sharing) a dessert. Order some fruit or Jell-O instead, if you must have something sweet.

7. Arrive with a healthy meal in mind and ask for it without opening your menu. This will spare you the pain of looking at an array of temptation.

8. After each bite, put your fork down, and don't pick it up again until you've completely swallowed the last bite.

9. Drink a glass of skim milk or soy milk before you leave your house.

10. Look for restaurants that serve contemporary, spa or California cuisine.

OTHER EATING TIPS

Treat yourself once a week to a something you love. Don?t pig out the whole day because you will undo all your hard work from the previous week.

Bring your own lunch and snacks from home. Prepare the night before to save time.

Every time you crave something (example: a burger, pizza, cake, cookies, etc.) write it down on a piece of paper and put it in a jar. On Saturday or Sunday pull one item out of the jar and go for it!

7 Tips for Dieting Success

There are lots of dieters, trying every sort of plan to lose weight and get healthier. But, rather than examine diet plans or the details of how and why low-carb diets work, here are some useful tips that can be used in any diet plan -- and, really, in any sensible approach to eating.

Tip 1: Drink 8 to 10 Glasses of Water Every Day

You've heard this one over and over. But, it isn't easy and too few people actually do it. Your body needs water to keep your system clean, to process food, to keep your skin in good shape and more. Sure, it'll use any liquid, but pure water works best. But - there's no taste, at least with pure water. This can be difficult since we're conditioned to want sweetness and flavors. But, it gets easier the more you do it. It's a matter of re-conditioning your taste buds, and yourself. Once started, you'll begin to crave water.

Drink a glass, or even two, as soon as you wake up. Especially in the beginning, those are the easy two. And they'll help you remember.

If you can't stand the taste of water, try a purifying pitcher or filter, or add a few drops of lemon or lime to your water - but no sugar or sweetener. Check out the flavored waters, too. Just keep an eye out for additives.

Tip 2: Eat Breakfast

Don't skip breakfast. If you need to go to bed earlier so that you can get up 20 minutes earlier each morning - do it! Breakfast is vitally important to good health and weight control. According to Dr. Barbara Rolls a professor of nutrition at Penn State University, Your metabolism slows while you sleep, and it doesn't rev back up until you eat again.

Eating breakfast is good for overall weight loss and it helps you stay on track with your diet the rest of the day. Skip breakfast and you're more likely to binge.

Short on time? Keep hard-boiled eggs and high-fiber, low starch fruit in the fridge. If you plan to eat fruit during the day, breakfast is a perfect time to do it.

Tip 3: Eat 3 Meals and 2 Snacks Every Day

This could be a hard adjustment to make. Hey, you're busy! You already have a full-plate. When are you going to eat more?

But, exactly like eating breakfast will increase your metabolism, so will eating more often. This also helps you curb bad-carb intake by making sure that your snacks are planned and occur regularly throughout the day.

Tips 4: Avoid White Foods

This is an easy way to remember what not to eat. If it's made from sugar, flour, potatoes, rice or corn - just say no. Yes, those rice cakes are actually an unhealthy high-carb snack.

Look for color. Buy broccoli, lettuce, bell peppers, green beans and peas, brown rice (in moderation), leafy greens like kale and spinach, apples, melons, oranges and grapes.

Not only colorful, they're also high in fiber, nutrients and important antioxidants. Eating colorful fruits and vegetables will give your diet variety as well as give you added health benefits. Eat your veggies.

Tip 5: Prepare Your Own Food

While more restaurants offer so-called low-carb menu items, many of them are not ideal low-carb fare. There are many recipes for quick and easy meals that you can prepare yourself at home. Do this as often as possible.

Cooking your own foods, you know exactly what the contents are and you'll be able to better control hidden sugar and other processed junk.

This tip saves you money too. Even if you end up going to the grocery store more often, you'll save versus eating out.

Tip 6: Eat Some Protein At Every Meal And With The Snacks

In addition to everything that's been discussed before, eating protein helps you burn more calories. Jeff Hample, Ph.D., R.D., a spokesman for the American Dietetic Association says that, Protein is made up mainly of amino acids, which are harder for your body to breakdown, so you burn more calories getting rid of them.

Beautiful - eat a protein rich snack and lose weight. How about a few slices of turkey or ham or some string cheese?

Eating protein also helps you feel full so you're less likely to crave unhealthy snacks.

Tip 7: Invest In Good Cookbooks

Can?t figure out what to eat? Need variety? Get a cookbook. Granted, not all recipes in a cookbook are low-carb, but you'll be surprised at the number of low-carb and low-carb friendly recipes you can find in your standard Betty Crocker Cookbook.

Cookbooks are great reference tools that contain handy tips on purchasing cuts of meat and preparing meats, fruits and vegetables in new and exciting ways.

Plus, new low-carb cookbooks are hitting the shelves all the time. So be sure to take advantage of these resources to try something new, different and delicious.

So that's the seven tips, but here's an extra. Stay out of the center of the supermarket. It'll be easier to stick with your low-carb lifestyle if you learn this common thread in most grocery store designs: the healthy foods are on the perimeter aisles.

Think about it, when you go into the grocery all the healthy stuff, fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products, tend to be around the stores walls. You only rarely need to enter the center aisle areas if it's a store that keeps butter and cheese in the center near the frozen foods. Usually all of the foods that you need for your low carb diet can be found on the perimeter of the grocery store.

Train yourself to start on one end of the outer aisle and work your way around. It will be much easier to avoid carb cravings and fill your basket with healthy items if you do so.

Just these few tips can make a significant difference in how successful you can be with your diet. Use them as part of your approach to dieting and a healthier lifestyle. You'll love your new self.

A Personal Trainers...Holidaze

Rules of day to day no longer apply as you surrender to the hearts and minds of those closest. Conversation, food and wine are intoxicating. You can?t leave the table the conversation is too good. The holiday food keeps coming. I fall back into the silken warmth of family stories and recollections of past years.

I generally eat until I am sated but now? its quest for space, I must keep up, I can?t be that? ?I don?t eat that wimp?. I can?t spoil this mood and bring everyone down to reality! Somehow I manage to find space for that piece of dark nutty chocolate beckoning me to come home to my pallette, where it would receive all the comfort love and warmth I need to express in this state of holiday bliss. I have now surrendered?.. The conversation wonders back to a particular chocolate that sister in law is passionate about and as she unfolds its mysteries you must taste and discover. This is no time for excuses.

Feeling good. Eyes wonder out to the blanket of snow and everything feels safe and warm. The last place I would want to go is out into the cold (?reality? I think). All is swell; until that transition day when you walk back into the doors of your own home?. if you can fit.

All the good times, and intoxication are fading into never ever land. I look at myself in the mirror and think ?I did my duty?. Then dreamily go into a fond reverie?.until I try on those tight jeans!!!

It?s time to take action, I feel passionate again, my workouts are inspired. I?m like Rocky Balboa. Underdog to champion. As long as I try my best I am guaranteed results, I can only get better from here. It?s back to clean living and motorvation.

More than anything I think it?s the transitions that are harder than anything. Resisting the surrendering to the holidaze, then resisting leaving them. And it?s exactly this change that fuels the fire within. Change, is like a breath of fresh air. The air causes a conflagration, of fire for inspiration.

The Atkins Diet Rules Explained

Following the Atkins Diet rules helped me to lose 120 pounds in about eighteen months. While I am thrilled with the results, I found that when I first started the hardest part was sticking with rules until I got a real feel for what I could and couldn?t do as I went through the four phases.

It sounds funny, but the part of the diet that I actually found easiest was also the strictest ? the Atkins Diet Induction rules. I was on this phase for about two weeks, and it really kicked off my weight loss. The reason I found it so easy was because it was so strict. There was very little room for ?fudging? the diet because the guidelines were so specific.

Induction Rules

The Induction rules are very straightforward: Lots of protein and a healthy amount of fats. No refined sugar or wheat products. Lots of water and liquids that don?t contain sugar or sweeteners (except some Splenda).

Eat till Satisfied, but NOT Stuffed

I ate three meals a day without fail ? it was important to do this so that my body adjusted to burning off the fat and not going into a ?fasting? mode when I went too long without eating. I also stuck with one of the cardinal rules of the Atkins program ? I ate until I felt full and satisfied, but not stuffed. I found that over time that I had this feeling of satisfaction sooner rather than later, so I learned to really listen to my body.

Stick to the Allowed Foods on the List

I never ate margarine or hydrogenated oils or trans fats. Even a little bit of these can stall an entire day?s worth of eating properly according to the rules. Dairy products such as milk and yogurt were out, as was fruit and fruit juice. Grains were a big no-no, and I paid attention to these rules.

Eat the Proper Amounts

I also paid attention to amounts ? for instance, only three or four ounces of cheese and no more. It can be tempting to eat a lot of the things you are allowed, but you need to keep the quantities in balance. If you?re still hungry and have already eaten your allowance of cheese, for instance, eat some meat or add more salad vegetables to your diet. This is easy to do because Dr. Atkins? Induction diet rules call for up to three whole cups of salad greens every day!

Surprisingly, since I knew exactly what was permitted, it was easy for me to stick to the Atkins diet menu. I just kept a list of acceptable foods handy (a copy of the rules on my refrigerator and another in my wallet for eating out) at all times. I knew this was the strict portion of the diet rules and so I stayed within the boundaries all the time, including drinking eight glasses of water every day.

Phases II, III and IV

The other phases (Weight Loss, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance) were a bit trickier. The Atkins Diet Rules are always pretty clear, but as you move from phase to phase you have to listen more to your body and adjust amounts and types of food accordingly. One of the things that took me a bit of time was learning just how many carbohydrates I could eat in a day without stalling my weight loss.

The Diet is Not Hard to Follow

Following Dr. Atkins? rules helped me to gauge what ?low carb? meant for my particular metabolism, but it took some fiddling around with my diet for a few days. The nice part of it was that, with new foods allowed and more leeway, I had a lot of fun learning and adjusting. It really taught me how much of a pleasure the Atkins diet can be because I could eat so many things.

The most important part of the Atkins diet rules is understanding carbohydrates and how much of them you can or can?t eat. Fortunately, the book, ?Dr. Atkins? New Diet Revolution,? clearly outlined everything for me. It contained specific lists of foods that I could eat and even broke it down into a ?ladder? so that I knew which carbs were best and which were only borderline.

For instance, according to the Atkins diet, seeds and nuts are lower carb than whole grains or starchy vegetables. The Atkins diet works for me because everything is broken down so clearly and you know exactly how to keep track of your carbs.

If you?re trying to lose weight, I encourage you to take a good look at Atkins. The Atkins diet rules make it easy because you start with a strict set of rules that will get your weight loss started ? a real motivator! After you?ve started, the rules become less strict so that you can stick with it for a long time without feeling deprived. And finally, Dr. Atkins has written so much about the program that you can find an answer to every food question you could possibly have, making it easy to follow the rules!

Are you not sure how to create a healthy weight loss diet plan? There are so many diets available that it can become difficult to stay focused on a weight loss diet plan that you can stick too. That is because most diets don?t fit our individual needs. For example, many people don?t want to lose weight by eliminating entire food groups such as a no carbohydrate diet. It?s just not convenient.

If you are looking to find a healthy weight loss diet plan that fits your needs here are some tips to get you started.

Learn the basics of eating right

In order to create a diet plan, you need to learn the basics of eating right. Research what foods are good for you and uncover foods you need to avoid most of the time. A good place to check is your local book store.

While there are many books out there that will help you. I suggest a book that is straight forward and doesn?t provide fancy gimmicks. Your source should be very fundamental and provide plenty of information on eating right. It should be a resource you can refer too while you are refining and perfecting your own diet plan.

Another place to look is the internet. You can find a lot of great information about proper nutrition from many sources. Also, you can find up to date information and keep your diet plan fresh by trying new things out. Remember, creating a healthy weight loss diet plan that fits your needs is all about researching what will work for you.

Set the standards of your diet

There is no ?one size fits all? solution when it comes to a healthy weight loss diet plan. We all have unique tastes, lifestyles and cultural values. Embrace that and write down all the foods that you like.

During your research on eating right you will learn which foods are optimal for you and which foods are bad. Proper nutrition is a complex subject. Keep a list of these foods so you have a constitution to your program.

Another important standard is that your weight loss diet plan should fit your lifestyle, not the other way around. Healthy diet plans that fit your life style are much easier and more compelling to follow and stay with. For example, if you?re a parent your food choices should not be abstract of what the rest of your family eats. In other words, your meals should be the same as what your family eats.

Create a plan each week

Planning is the key to success or failure with maintaining your diet. First, your plan should consist of your short term goals. For example, ?I will lose 2 lbs? is a goal. Use your plan to think through trouble spots for the week.

Some examples of common trouble spots are, nights when you eat out, school functions, working late, little league games, days that require a lot of driving and ordering out at the office. Your daily menu of all meals should be included with your plan and approximate times that you will be eating. You should also set up a meal or two as cheat meals.

With a little research and planning you can create a healthy weight loss diet plan. You just need to learn about feeding your body correctly and identify what will be a fit for you. Once you are up and running with your own plan, then you?ll be able to be more consistent at staying with your diet.

Which Weight Loss Program Should I Choose?

Anyone who is focused on weight loss has seen the before and after photos from various weight loss programs along with testimonials from people who have lost weight and look great.

Do these weight loss programs really work? The answer is both ?yes? and ?no?. It all depends on what kind of dieter you are and which weight loss program works best for you.

Of course, the question then becomes how to decide which weight loss program to choose?

First, you have to remember that ?yo-yo? dieting puts stress on your body that can make losing weight more difficult and putting weight back on far too easy. The ultimate goal of any weight loss program is not just to lose weight, but to lose weight and keep it off. That is why it is important to choose a weight loss program and diet plan that will help you make changes to your eating habits that will last a lifetime.

Unfortunately, too many people who are trying to lose weight jump back and forth between a very restrictive diet and then returning to ?normal? eating after they have experienced some weight loss. ?All this will do is lead the dieter to put the weight back on. Instead, what you need to do is re-educate. Instead of choosing a strict weight loss plan that you'll abandon when the diet is done, commit to the recommendations for healthy eating from the USDA, and add half an hour of exercise to your daily routine five times a week. You'll establish healthy habits that will take off the pounds - and help you keep them off forever.

Secondly, decide just how much help you need. What motivates you? Are you a private person by nature, or do you do best with a lot of social support? Are you a strong-willed person who can decide to do something and 'just do it', or will you need help overcoming temptation?

If you thrive on social motivation, joining a weight loss program like Weight Watchers might be the best option for you. You'll have social support, motivational rewards, and weekly check-ins to help you stay on track and give you weight loss goals to aim for.

Next, do you do best with regimented, strict instructions that tell you exactly what you should do step by step, or are you happiest and more comfortable with a little flexibility?

If you do best when you have strict guidelines to follow and like routines, then look for a diet plan or weight loss program that gives you daily menus with precise measurements. While that may feel restrictive to many people, the trick is to choose a weight loss plan that works for you.

If restrictive diets and inflexible menus aren't for you, then try a diet that gives you the option of mixing and matching your meals within certain parameters. Whether you count carbs or calories, diets like the Atkins diet or Zone diet give you some flexibility within the prescribed 'allowed foods'.

Finally, what is your weight loss goal? How much weight do you want to lose? How long have you been trying to lose weight? Will quick results keep you motivated, or is slow-and-steady progress all you really need?

If you are looking for quick weight loss, try a quick-start with the Atkins diet to strip off the early weight - a lot of it water weight - so that you will see results immediately. When your results from such restrictive eating are slow, pick up the activity by adding a little more exercise and vary your diet a little. Most weight loss experts agree that your weight loss goal should aim for a steady 1-2 pounds per week, but if you need an extra boost, drop back to a more restrictive pattern to give your metabolism a little kick. However, be careful?if you stay with an extremely low calorie diet for too long you will actually slow your metabolism and it will become more difficult to lose weight.

Discover More About The World Of Diets

There are a lots of diet plans in the market today. Understanding these various diet programs can be the first step to losing weight. Here are some of the diet plans in the market.

Fixed Menu Diet
The fixed menu diet tells you exactly what you will consume over a period of time. This is easy for you because you do not have to shop for your own food.

The disadvantage to this type of diet is that you may not learn how to choose food for himself or herself. The diet food can also be bland and boring. Additionally, it difficult to follow the diet plan during travels.

Exchange Diet
Here, you get to choose your food from a number of different groups. For example, you could select pasta, rice, or potatoes from the starch group. The diet offers variety and you shouldn?t have any difficulty following it while you are on vacation. This diet plan also enables you to learn how to make healthy choices for yourself.

Pre-packaged Meal Diet
With pre-packaged meal diets, you have to buy food in pre-set portions. As a result, you are able to determine how much of a given food item you are allowed to have on a given day. However, such a program may be expensive and you don?t get the experience of selecting your own meals as the decision has been made on your behalf.

Formula Diet
On a formula diet, you will be drinking your breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or a combination of the meals. These liquid formulas are often filled with proteins and carbohydrates and contain little fat. The formula diet is convenient and can be economical. However, while individuals may lose weight in the short-run, they may not be able to sustain the weight loss in the long-run.

Flexible Diet
In flexible diets, you must decide what type of food you will eat and the size of portions. Such diets can be low-fat, low-calorie, or both. One disadvantage of such a diet program is that an individual might manage to cut out fat, but might also end up loading up on sugars.

Low-fat, High-Carbohydrate Diet
A study showed that individuals could lose weight through a low-fat, high-carbohydrate approach. The research indicated that the pounds could melt away, even if you didn?t exercise or reduce calories.

The author of the study maintained that since fats and carbs might be metabolized differently, reducing calories does not reduce one?s weight.

The American Dietetic Association maintains that it is possible to lose weight using a number of different approaches. Because of the many types of diets in the market, there are also confusion over which ones are truly effective.

Some physicians recommend consultations with a dietician to obtain a personalized weight loss plan. This way, you can rely on expert advice for your meal planning. The plan can also be individualized to meet your unique nutritional needs.

Generally, health experts say the best weight loss programs combine diet with exercise. In this way, you can ensure that your body is using food efficiently. You can build up your strength and muscle tone, becoming more fit in the process.

Anyone who has ever even thought about dieting has undoubtedly heard of the Weight Watchers plan and it is amazing to see that what began as a get together between a few friends in the house of Jean Nidetch in Queens to discuss dieting ideas and tips has grown into a large publicly quoted company employing nearly 50,000 people and operating in more than 30 countries worldwide.

But just why has Weight Watchers become so successful and why does the company continue to expand after more than 40 years in operation?

The answer lies in the fact that Weight Watchers does not simply offer a diet plan but is based upon the philosophy of dieting as part of an overall plan to set and maintain a healthy lifestyle in term of physical, mental and emotional health.

Consequently Weight Watchers does not just provide you with a diet sheet and tell you what you can and can't eat, but provides you with the information and advice necessary to make the best decisions about your diet.

Further, and very importantly, the Weight Watchers plan gives you a level of support and motivation that is essential to your success and that is lacking in so many other weight loss plans.

Locally held group meetings, which many people who have not benefited from the Weight Watchers experience often dismiss as simply a waste of time, are, in many ways, the key to the Weight Watchers plan. Not only do these meetings provide a wealth of advice, information and tips, but they also allow members to offer each other encouragement and support which is critical to the long-term success of any diet.

Additionally, the fact that you will need to meet with your fellow members on a regular basis and show them your progress, or lack of it, is a very good way of helping you to stay on track as, occasionally, you are tempted to stray from the path of your dieting plan.

Underpinning Weight Watcher?s philosophy of dieting there is of course a basic diet plan, or to be more precise, two plans - the points plan and the core plan.

The idea behind the points plan will be familiar to anybody who has tried dieting. Members are given a weekly points allocation depending upon their present weight and the weight they are aiming for and are allowed to eat anything they like up to this points allocation.

The strength of the points system is that a points score is given to any food imaginable and there's no limit on the types of food that you are permitted but only on the quantity which you can eat dependent upon that food's points score. This is in sharp contrast to many other diets that ban some foods completely or require that particular foods are included in your diet.

The points plan also provides you with a great deal of flexibility by allocating negative points for exercise. So, if you decide to go over your points allocation you can do so as long as you take enough exercise to compensate for the additional points consumed.

The core plan was created in response to the popularity the South Beach and Atkins plans. Under this plan a wide variety of foods including whole grain foods, lean meats, fat free airy products, lean meats, and whole grain foods are classed as core foods and there is no limit on the quantity of these foods that you can eat, other than the provision that you should only eat these foods to satisfy your hunger rather than eat them until you are full.

Any food item that is not included on the core list is then allocated a score in the regular manner and members are given a weekly allowance of 35 points for these foods.

There is nothing new of course in either the points plan or the core plan and many of the hundreds of diets available follow the same sort of pattern. The strength however of the Weight Watchers plan is not to be found in the underpinning diet itself, but in the need that all dieters have for information, advice, help and, above all, support in what is typically a long, and at times difficult, struggle to remove those stubborn pounds.

Operating largely as a club, Weight Watchers has gone from strength to strength over the years and, as long as it continues to provide so much more than just a diet plan, it will doubtless continue to flourish in the future.

Atkins Diet is the method of burning carbohydrates by drastically minimizing the intake of fat.

But the people who consume potato, starch, to the maximum extent find it harder to follow this pattern of diet. The protein-rich foods do not belong to this category. There are four distinct stages to follow this diet. The first step in the Atkins diet is the induction stage where you are allowed about 20 grams of carb intake daily. You must eat more vegetables during this period and avoid the intake of baked foods and fruits. After the induction you can leisurely increase your intake of carbohydrates to about 60 to 90 grams per day.

According to the Atkins diet, the ill effects of excess carbohydrates include increased weight, increased appetite, etc. The slow metabolism process helps in converting the carbs into fats. But when you follow the Atkins diet pattern you are bound to lose weight within a shorter span. You can hence, regulate the cholesterol content in the body and reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

In general Atkins diet suggests consuming the right type of food in the right manner and adequately providing exercise to the body. According to this diet it is not advised to lose weight rapidly but losing about 2 to 4 pounds a week is ideal. Do not hastily attempt to lose weight but plan reasonably to keep your weight under control and also see that you remain healthy. Most Atkins followers have reported weight loss with no visible side effects. A lot of studies are going on to find whether the Atkins diet is really helpful.

Is Excess Weight in Your Future?

According to a new research study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, ninety percent of all adult males can be expected to become overweight as they age, whereas the number is closer to seventy percent of women.

Success with the Zone Diet Program depends largely upon restricting the amount of carbohydrates consumed while maximizing the vitamins and minerals derived from them. Sadly, many individuals have difficulty recognizing what a carbohydrate is since they think of carbohydrates as only pasta and sweets. In truth, fruits and vegetables are also carbohydrates. An easy way to remember this is that carbohydrates grow in the ground, and don't move around. Pasta must be a carbohydrate, since it comes from wheat, which grows in the ground.

Similiarily, vegetables like broccoli grow in the ground, so they are also carbohydrates. Finally, fruits like apples come from trees that grow in the ground, which makes them carbohydrates as well. Although this may seem overly simplified, the fact that fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates is a major revelation to many Americans.

It might be tough in the beginning so do not expect a standing ovation when you first remove the chips or soda pop from your home. Behavior change takes a great deal of time and patience. The great part about implementing these changes is that the benefits will occur almost immediately because when you rid your body of junk food your mind and body function better because the food that you are putting is high octane instead of sludge. You will eventually be free from weight and health issues caused by poor eating.

You have been on diets before. You probably have lost weight. But sometimes, it?s tough to stay focused and on track. What?s been missing from your efforts? It is possible to lose weight in a consistent way and keep the pounds off.

Perhaps in addition to a solid diet plan, there are some other aspects you have overlooked. It?s important in any of your efforts to have motivation and drive to achieve your goals. Dieting is no different and with a few changes around your excitement for the task, you can get to your target weight.

1. Make it fun
Tired of the same foods on your regimen? Do the meals seem boring and repetitive? Try a new recipe that makes sense with your plan. Spices and herbs don?t interfere with most diet plans and can add a lot of flavor to the same ingredients. If you are cooking just for yourself, don?t settle. Make Tuesday a special occasion. You?re going to be eating for the rest of your life. Make it enjoyable.

2. Have a goal
It?s easy to get lost without a map. You can get easily sidetracked if you have vague weight loss goals. If you tell yourself, ?I?m going to lose a few pounds before that event,? you can fall off your plan as quick as a trip to the coffee shop bakery. Don?t settle for losing 10 or 20 pounds if your target weight is 40 or 50 pounds away. If you lost the first few pounds, you can get to your goal by continuing what you?ve been doing.

3. Get help
You can also get lost if you refuse to stop and ask directions. Most tasks are easier if we recruit help. This can be family, friends, or coworkers. Help does not mean everyone in your life will eat the same as you. But asking for support on difficult days is important. Letting the people in your life know what you are doing will give you that extra push when you need it. Getting help can also take the form of enjoying people ask, ?Have you lost weight??

4. Ruin your wardrobe
Part of the excitement of losing weight is finding your clothes get loose?or, finding that last year?s jeans actually fit now. One way to reinforce your efforts is to set aside some funds for every pound you lose. Put away $5, $10, or whatever amount feels right and when you hit that goal, go shopping and replace your ill fitting old clothes.

5. Enjoy the extra energy
As you lose weight, you?ll feel better and likely have more energy. Do something you?ve been putting off. Or, take the energy and become more active as you had been in the past. The increased energy as you lose weight lets you do more and increasing your activity level only moves you closer to your weight loss goals.

Take what you know about your body and turn it into a plan that works for you. Sometimes, it takes a complete direction change to get to your goals. Other times, some fine tuning can turn a good plan into a success.

Weight Loss Facts and "Magic Bullets"

Facts not Fiction about Weight loss:

Weight Loss Facts If you take anything away from reading this article it is my hope that you will fully understand and be able to differentiate weight loss facts from fiction. To put it plainly, no diet in the world is going to help you lose weight and keep it off permanently. This is especially true if you buy into the latest fad diets touting high protein/high fat intake while strictly limiting your ingestion of carbohydrates. What these diets fail to tell you is that many of the foods that are richest in essential vitamins and minerals are considered carbohydrates?more specifically, complex carbohydrates.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grain products are all beneficial to our health because they are high in antioxidants, fiber, protein, and minerals that our bodies need to thrive. If you cut out these complex carbohydrates because you are afraid eating them will make you fat, you are doing your body a huge disservice. Likewise, if you take in too much protein from high fat sources, such as beef and lamb, you are further complicating matters. Meats high in saturated fats lead to clogged arteries, obesity, vascular problems, and a feeling of sluggishness.

Unfortunately, the media does not want Americans to understand the true weight loss facts, because if we did they would lose millions of dollars a year in revenue.

Think about all of the products on the market today that are geared towards weight loss, such as high protein bars, zero carb cereals and breads, and a host of supplements. My new personal favorite is the cream made from a cactus that you rub on your body externally to accomplish weight loss. If we become educated enough to realize that we do not necessarily need to buy such products to lose weight and feel great, these companies would go bankrupt. Therefore, they are willing to spend millions of dollars a year in advertising to cover up the real weight loss facts and keep us hooked on their products. People are so desperate for a weight loss super pill they seem willing to try anything except common sense.

It Is Time You Understood the Real Weight Loss Facts If you want to lose weight and keep it off you must do two things?exercise regularly and eat a diet that limits saturated fats, preservatives, sugars, and sodium. Aim for foods that are in their natural state, and avoid those pesky middle aisles of the supermarket that are stocked with prepackaged foods. Take time to prepare a healthy meal for yourself every evening, and strive for better food selections when eating out. The end result is that you will begin to see those pounds melt away, your energy will increase, your sleep will improve, and your outlook on life in general will be much brighter. Sure, it takes time, but aren't all things worth having worth working for? I think so.

The Atkins Low Carb Diet: Still Very Popular After All This Time!

The Atkins low carb diet has been around since the mid-1970?s and really took off in popularity during the 1990?s and 2000?s. After all that time it has certainly proven its ability to help people lose weight and keep the weight off.

The Atkins Low Carb Diet Difference

What has made the Atkins diet program continue to be so popular over the years when other diet plans have come and gone? What is so different about the Atkins diet guidelines that have allowed followers to be so successful with their weight loss?

The difference is in the attitude that the Atkins low carb diet fosters. It is not just a temporary pattern of eating, nor is it a huge cutback in calories that cannot be maintained over time. Instead, the Atkins diet program is really a lifestyle, not just a diet program. It focuses on changing habits for long term effect, not just short term cutting calories and then a return to old eating patterns.

Making it Easy to do Atkins

Most people find it easy to follow the Atkins low carb diet for two reasons:

? The food is delicious ? no bland or boring meals
? The food is easy to find ? at the grocery store, at convenience stores, at restaurants, and more

The taste of food in the Atkins diet meal plans is really different from other diet plans. You do not have to deprive yourself of the foods and flavors that you really enjoy. In fact, you are practically required to eat the foods and flavors that you most enjoy. What a deal!

With other diet plans, it can be tough to find the food that you are supposed to eat each day. Some plans require you to buy their own food, which is okay if you have easy access to it and do not ever eat a meal out. With Atkins, though, you know which foods are okay and which ones are not, and you use that information to select what you eat no matter where you may be.

Atkins Diet Foods ? Make it Yourself or Buy it Pre-Made

The Atkins low carb diet lets you have the best of both worlds when it comes to selecting food. You can make meals yourself by selecting from the huge list of allowed foods, or if you are in a hurry, you can choose pre-made meals from the Atkins group themselves.

Some of the most popular pre-made foods include:

? Breakfast bars
? Snack bars
? Meal replacement bars
? Liquid shakes
? Candy
? Ice cream

Pre-made foods are really convenient and easy when you are on the go and do not have time to eat a regular meal, or just to carry along in your purse or briefcase for those times when you need a little boost. Many people keep a box of snack bars in their office drawer or a few liquid shakes in the office refrigerator just to have on hand.

How does Atkins Compare to Other Low Carb Diet Plans?

When the Atkins low carb diet first came out in the 1970?s it was unique; there was nothing comparable in widespread use. During the resurgence in the 1990?s and 2000?s, though, a whole host of imitators and similar versions began to appear.

Most of those other low carb diet plans were similar to the Atkins diet guidelines, but they lacked two important components for success:

? A proven nutritional approach
? Ongoing support and motivation to stay with a low carb lifestyle

The Atkins diet program is a proven nutritional approach. When you feed your body a diet high in carbohydrates that is what it burns mostly for fuel, leaving fats to build up and get stored away. Reducing the carbohydrate intake, though, forces the body?s metabolism to ?switch gears? so to speak, and start burning stored fats instead.

When you adopt an Atkins-based low carb lifestyle, you are not left alone to muddle through entirely by yourself. There are many Atkins books, articles and other publications available to encourage you and motivate you to truly change your lifestyle. There are carb counters, calendars, food journals, cookbooks, recipe collections and more ? just about any kind of support or helpful tool you could possibly want.

The Atkins web site is also a tremendous source of information and support. There are free online classes, discussion groups, informational articles, and a free e-mail newsletter. All of these items are designed specifically to help you adopt and maintain a low carb lifestyle so that you can enjoy dramatic and lasting weight loss success.

Atkins Controversy

Of course, no diet plan is without at least some controversy along the way, and Atkins is no exception. Some people are very concerned about the high levels of fats allowed on the diet, especially during the induction and weight loss phases.

What most naysayers do not fully appreciate, though, is that as your body becomes accustomed to a low carbohydrate lifestyle you can gradually increase carbs. Over time, your diet gradually starts to include many more varieties of nutrients, offering you a good solid nutritional base to keep you active and healthy.

Another reason to appreciate the unique Atkins low carb diet is that it cuts down on harmful sugars and other sweets without leaving you with uncontrollable cravings that cause you to have episodes of binging on cookies, candy and other sweets. Atkins is a satisfying collection of foods, allowing you a taste of sweets now and then but generally keeping you satiated and satisfied thanks to the variety of other foods that are allowed.

Getting Started

Before starting any diet or nutritional regimen, you should consult with your doctor and have a thorough check up. He or she will then have a baseline of information about your health, making it easier to track your progress and really see how much your health improves over time.

I encourage you to work with your doctor and connect with others who are following a low carb lifestyle in order to gain the maximum benefit and effectiveness from the Atkins low carb diet.

NotOneOunce The Runup To Thanksgiving

The 8-Week Campaign to Survive the Holidays

Eating preparations in the run up to Thanksgiving.

The turkey tsunami hits on the 3rd Thursday in November. It comes complete and replete with piles of potatoes, pies, sauces, stuffing, and all the rest. When you survey that mound of food, you realize that everything in there is healthy.

If you're eating all healthy foods, what?s the problem?

The problem is volume, pure and simple. Eating a trough full of anything will make you overweight and unhealthy; and the typical Thanksgiving meal is normally served with a forklift. Name one thing on this planet that you cannot overconsume, to make it become bad for you.

Short term problem

After Thanksgiving, most people have to be rolled away from the table to recover on the couch for a solid hour of college football. Obviously, if the stretch receptors in the wall of your stomach are screaming at you stop, Stop, STOP, you have added far too many calories at that meal. In addition to the terrible feeling of being completely stuffed, you have simply added to your expanding horizons.

Long term problem

You stomach is completely adaptable, and responds to what you put in it. If you put it too much food, you are simply training your stomach to receive more and more food at the next sitting. This long term problem comes back at you down the road by increasing your tendency to overeat in the future. Just as you can train yourself to eat smaller over time, you can train yourself to eat and overeat gigantic portions.

Now what do we do?

Begin preparing for T-day now. Put away your large plates and replace them with the medium sized ones. When you do this, you will put less on your plate than you normally do, and you can begin to train your body to expect less food in the long term. Make that amount last through the entire meal (about 20 - 30 minutes).

When T-day does arrive, you will eat on your smaller plate, consume less food, and be the only groan-free member of your family on the post-dinner couch!

Expanding Waist Lines

As many of us well know, our expanding waistlines are at epidemic proportion in America. For those who are dubious, epidemic, according to Webster-Merriam online dictionary means, affecting or tending to affect a disproportionately large number of individuals within a population, community or region at the same time.

When a person is twenty percent or more above their normal weight in terms of fat mass, then that particular person is considered obese. Morbid obesity is when a person is either fifty to a hundred percent over normal weight, more than one hundred pounds over normal weight, or so overweight that the extra baggage greatly interferes with the health of normal daily functions.

Many of us have been carrying around some extra baggage for so long and have become so desensitized to our slowly ascending dress sizes, and have become so used to referring to ourselves as healthy and voluptuous that we may not even realize there may be a body fat issue. The Body Mass Index, or BMI assessment can be helpful. This is used by health professionals to determine if a person is underweight, overweight or within a healthy weight range.

BMI does not distinguish the difference between the weight of fat and the weight of muscle, which is exponentially more. Because of this, it is not always accurate as far as the prediction of health concerns. For instance, a bodybuilder or someone with a lot of muscles may have a BMI that is numerically in the unhealthy range, even though they may be healthy as oxen.

BMI might also fall short of accurately reflecting body fat in people who are very short (under 5 feet) and in older people who tend to lose muscle mass as they age. It can also be inaccurate for some racial and ethnic groups like African-American and Latino American women, who tend to have different body types than Caucasian and Asian women, for example.

The location of fat on your body is important. Those who carry fat mainly around their waists may be more likely to develop health issues than those who carry their extra baggage in their hips and thighs. Even if your BMI falls within the normal range, this is true.

To measure your waist circumference, place a tape measure around your naked abdomen just above your hip bone. The tape should be snug, parallel to the floor and shouldn't compress your skin. Relax and exhale as you measure your waist.

Women with a waist measurement of more than thirty five inches or men with a waist measurement of more than forty inches may have a higher risk than people with smaller waist measurements.

Age can also be a factor. As you get older, your body's metabolism slows down and it doesn't require as many calories to maintain its weight. So, this is why you may be forty years old with a similar lifestyle to when you were twenty but may notice a slight difference: at twenty you didn't gain weight, but now at forty, you have gained weight. In addition, certain drugs, like steroids and some antidepressants, may cause excessive weight gain.

Females generally tend to experience unwanted weight gain more than men. Men burn more calories when they rest, so they require more calories to maintain their body weight. Also, when women enter the doors of menopause, their metabolic rate decreases significantly, which is partly why women gain so much weight after menopause. The Mediterranean Diet is based on the foods people of the Mediterranean region have been eating for centuries. Studies have shown that in addition to a lower incidence of obesity, countries like Greece and Italy actually have a lower incidence of chronic disease and a longer life expectancy than our ?modern? society. The real kicker is that these countries consume, on average, a whopping 40% of their calories from fat ? about double the amount recommended by most health experts today!

What?s their Secret?

No one knows for sure! But many nutritionists and health practitioners have decided that it?s more important to learn from the success of the eating habits of these regions than it is to answer the question of why it works the way it does.

Recent research suggests that olive oil does even more than lower the levels of LDL, the bad boy of cholesterol. In fact, more and more studies are backing up the belief that olive oil also contains antioxidants that discourage clogging of the arteries and other chronic diseases ? even cancer!

The diet is centered around healthy fats like olive oil, as well as food items such as nuts and avocados that have high levels of healthy fats. The Mediterranean Diet also recommends eating healthy grains, including pasta, bread, and legumes. Participants are encouraged to eat fish several times a week, augmented by lean protein, while red meat is limited.

What the Site Has

What it doesn?t have is testimonials, sales pitches, and product pitches. In fact, the site is unusually devoid of anything resembling a sales pitch. Instead, The Mediterranean Diet site is truly informational, dispensing the basic guidelines of the eating plan and leaving the rest to you! Since the recommendations fall exclusively under the ?real? food category, you can hit the ground running with the basic details of this easy-to-follow- plan!

The Mediterranean Diet site does have a few subtle references to Mediterranean food companies, but these seem geared more toward restaurants that might want to increase their usage of these types of products than to the average consumer.

The website is packed full of interesting reading. There?s an entire page detailing the health benefits of olive oil. Did you know that the therapeutic benefits of olive oil were first mentioned by Hippocrates, the Father of Modern Medicine? Or that olive oil was used to maintain skin and muscle suppleness, heal abrasions, and soothe the burning and drying effects of sun and water? It?s true! Olive oil is mentioned in thousands of historical texts as an irrefutable health and beauty supplement

The site also thoroughly explains the way cholesterol works in the body ? both good and bad. And while it might not seem important, it?s compelling to realize that this is an eating plan that dates back centuries, and that before we messed everything up with our out-of-control portions and trans-fatty fast foods, civilizations the world over lived long and healthy lives by following this type of diet.

Diet

What is a diet? Does a diet really help you lose weight? Are they healthy? Why would anyone want to go on one?

These are questions that almost everybody is asking these days.

First of all, despite my normal advice against diets, I do have to admit that in some circumstances, for some people, they can help a person's weight loss program. Let me explain a couple of things, however.

People today get confused when they hear the word diet. They usually think that it always applies to some special plan of eating which is intended to help people lose weight. This isn't always so, and there was a time that the word was simply used to indicate a list of what a person ate. Scholars would, and still do, talk about the diet of a tribe, nation, or cultural group. Doctors would prepare a list of foods intended to accomplish some goal other than weight loss, and the word would be applied to that list of foods. Heck, I was placed on one as a small child in order to determine what food might be causing an allergy I had at the time.

Today the word has come to mean a special list of foods you can or cannot eat if you wish to lose weight. Many of these have achieved almost mystical status and many have their own followings. Just witness how far the Atkins and South Beach Diets have extended themselves in our society.

Before Dr. Atkins came along and South Beach was discovered, I am sure you remember such exciting diets as those centered around specific foods which practically guaranteed weight loss success. You could eat grapefruit, cabbage soup, or you could enjoy the promised effects of the negative calorie diet. Most have these have faded away for three basic reasons:

1. People got tired of eating the same thing meal after meal.

2. They were unrealistic in their expectations. How could you get cabbage soup when on vacation, or at a business luncheon.

3. Most of the time, they simply didn't work.

While going on a diet for a short period may produce a small loss for some people, dieting is simply not the answer to a lifelong weight loss problem. If you are just a few pounds overweight and want to drop a few dress sizes by the wedding in two weeks, a diet just might do the trick, and, for that short time, you will probably be able to stick with it as long as you keep your goal in sight.

The downside of a diet is threefold:

* The effects are not permanent or life changing

* It does not contribute to health and vitality

* It may actually contribute to weight gain

I have covered these subjects in more depth in other articles I have written, and, because of limited space, I will just provide a quick overview of these topics.

Most people will not stay on a diet for a myriad of reasons, and it normally cannot be adapted to a new style of eating - a lifestyle change. Admittedly, some people have hereditary or genetic situations that they cannot overcome, but which cause them to become overweight. However, for anyone, at least a portion of what made someone overweight is a part of their life choices, and it is these choices which must be changed in order for permanent weight loss to occur.

Limiting nutritional intake or restricting access to a wide selection of nutritional options, such as in the grapefruit or cabbage soup diet, also limits the individual's access to nutrients necessary to normal health. Eating some foods, or types of foods, in excess may contribute to other health problems in some people.

Our bodies have been designed to operate and react in certain ways, and this includes how they react and function when changes occur in our diet. One of the effects of a failed attempt is that the body may actually put back on more weight than it originally had to contend with, and may even continue to gain over a prolonged period of time following coming off the program.

True, permanent weight loss for health and fitness hinges on three central points:

* Regular physical activity

* Periods of rest

* A sensible diet

Diet if you must, but realize that for your health and for permanent weight loss, you must do more. One last point. If you do choose to go on a diet, please take a daily multivitamin to help replace the nutrients you are missing.

Have you ever considered using the services of a personal trainer to help you get fit? Well, I?ve been in the training business for several years and have made some important observations. Because my mission is provide you with the most valuable information I can, I?d like to suggest you read this before you spend your first dollar. You won?t be sorry.

Millions of dollars are poured every year into private sessions with personal fitness trainers and results are often limited. Sometimes women aren?t even sure what results they can expect. And they are never asked what results they want.

Often when women are asked why they want to work with a trainer, they will look somewhat puzzled. Then they will stammer, ?I need someone to make sure I exercise? or ?I want to get in shape?. Go one step further and ask them what results they are really after and again they are stopped dead in their tracks. It is very important that you know what you expect so that your exercise prescription can be designed with very your specific goals in mind.

Hiring a personal trainer is one of the best investments you can make if you want to get into shape.

Time and again I?ve watched women come into the gym day in and day out exercising on their own and getting absolutely no results. They are certainly committed. They are willing to spend their time and effort. But designing a fitness program is a science with countless variables and one needs knowledge to have exercise sessions be most effective?and safe.

Most women won?t ask the questions they need to ask. They simply muddle through on their own. And many do a pretty good job of muddling through. But there comes that moment when, in order to really break through and get impressive results, they need to consult a professional. After all, how many people can learn to play the piano or ski well without at some point getting expert guidance?

However, once they take the step to hire a personal fitness trainer to guide them, many clients don?t demand enough of their trainers and many trainers don?t get results for their clients. They have a nice time together chatting and catching up but it ends up being more social than sweat.

Securing the right personal fitness trainer is not always simple to do. Most women have no way of knowing who is and who isn?t a good trainer. Although the fitness industry is working hard to upgrade the image of fitness professionals, there are still plenty of practitioners around who believe that just because they know how to get themselves into shape or because they care, they are qualified to train other people.

Here are some of the potential pitfalls:

On the part of the client:

The client?

. Isn?t clear about what he/she wants to accomplish.

. Doesn?t demand the best from trainer.

. Accepts unacceptable behavior on part of trainer;

i.e.,lateness, lack of attention, no charting of sessions to track progress, talking while client is exercising, use of cell phones during training session, or not planning sessions with an eye to results.

On the part of the trainer:

The trainer?

. Doesn?t ask client what they really want.

. Doesn?t customize the sessions, using boilerplate workouts.

. Doesn?t set goals with the client.

. Doesn?t dress appropriately.

. Doesn?t hold the client accountable, accepting unacceptable client behavior; i.e., cancellations, lateness, no-shows.

. Doesn?t keep his/her eye on the client during the session.

. Accepts less than perfect form.

. Doesn?t continually instruct client.

. Doesn?t educate client.

Getting the Client/Trainer Relationship You Want

There are several ways in which you can assure yourself that you are selecting the trainer who suits your needs. Here are some guidelines:

Chemistry

Not every trainer and client are suited to one another.

The first thing you need to do is make a few decisions before you interview even the first trainer. Do you want someone who is ?tough? like a drill sergeant or does a gentler type of coaching appeal to you? Do you want someone young or someone more mature? Do you feel more comfortable working with a man or a woman? If you have a preference, for goodness sake, don?t waste your time talking to anyone else. You need to feel comfortable with the person you select. You end up spending a great deal of time together. You need to find someone you can trust. After all, you are going to have to be willing to surrender to their coaching so you need to feel that whatever they are suggesting is in your best interest.

Philosophy

What is their training philosophy? How do they work with clients? How do they feel about what they do? Do they take their work seriously? Are they committed to fitness as a career? Are they ongoingly engaging in educating themselves about the most current developments and techniques in fitness? As in any discipline, research is always being done that produces new insights into the most effective ways to get results and, if they are truly committed to their chosen profession, they will want to find the most valuable information.

Specialty

There are trainers who are most effective with athletes; some work well with seniors, some with disabilities, some with pregnant women.

You need to know what you are looking for. What kind of trainer do you want? If you are a 50-year-old woman and hire a trainer who is interested in working with youthful body builders, you will surely be disappointed with your training sessions.

Credentials

You want to find out what degrees and/or certifications they have. I don?t mean to suggest that there aren?t terrific trainers who don?t have the best credentials, but the quality of the education is a pretty good indicator of their dedication to stretching themselves. They aren?t willing to slip by with the most minimum of training. And are they continuing to educate themselves and keep up with the latest training techniques?

Referrals

Ask for referrals. How do their current and past clients feel about them?

A few other important items

Do they have hours flexible enough to accommodate your schedule? They need to accommodate you; you don?t need to accommodate them.

Notice their personal appearance. Are they neat, clean, well groomed? Do they take pride in their appearance? A word of warning here. If you notice that the trainer is more interested in looking at him/herself in the mirror than watching you, you need to find someone else. His/her attention should be on you at all times.

Are they reliable and prompt? Were they on time for the interview? After all, you are going to be paying them for their time so they need to be there when they scheduled you.

And you?re not off the hook. Once you have made the commitment to personal training and have a found a trainer with whom you want to work, there are a few rules to which you need to adhere . . .. if you want to get the most out of your personal training.

You need to be on time for your training sessions.

You need to make your fitness a priority. Canceling sessions frequently displays a lack of commitment to the program. Consistency is important.

If canceling is unavoidable, you need to give your trainer sufficient notice. After all, it is their business and what they sell is their time.

You need to follow the trainer?s instructions given without whining. After all, you?ve put your trust in them.

You need to let your trainer know if you are having a physical problem. That will allow them to make intelligent decisions about your workout session. Don?t assume it doesn?t matter.

You need to do your best.

If you remember everything you?ve read here and then put it into practice, you will surely have a very positive and productive fitness training experience.
